CALGARY – Para alpine skier Kirk Schornstein competed at three Paralympic Games in his successful high performance sport career.

If he had listened to his detractors, that stretch of being on a Canadian national team, travelling to some of the greatest mountains in the world, and participating at not one, not two but three of the globe’s great sport celebration events would have never happened.

‘’The key to my success was I always proved people wrong,’’ said Schornstein, a member of the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Paralympic Games teams. ‘’I never really had an idol. My influences were those who told me I couldn’t do it.

‘’There’s no better feeling than to show someone I was able to do it, and I could do it better than a lot of other people.’’

Schornstein is the athlete ambassador for the next Paralympian Search, set for this Saturday November 24 at the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary. It is a one-day athlete identification event designed to test participant aptitudes to excel in various Paralympic sports, and maybe one day represent Canada at the Paralympic Games.

‘’Now that I’m retired one of my big goals is to help other aspiring athletes and Paralympian Search is a perfect venue,’’ said Schornstein, who will be a guide for a visually impaired skier at the upcoming Canada Games.

‘’Hopefully I can help them through some shortcuts, help them avoid problems I had in my career and motivate them to reach their highest levels in sport.’’
