The 2018 Paralympic Winter Games take place March 9 to 18 in PyeongChang, South Korea. The games will see close to 670 athletes competing in 80 medal events. 

Five sports are on the Paralympic Winter Games program: wheelchair curling, Para ice hockey (formerly known as sledge hockey), Para alpine skiing, Para snowboard and Para nordic, which includes cross-country and biathlon events.

About PyeongChang

Pyeongchang is a county in Gangwon province of South Korea located in the Taebaek Mountains region. It is home to several Buleslieddhist temples, including Woljeongsa. It is approximately 180 km (110 mi) east of Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Pyeongchang has completed the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and is currently hosting the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. Pyeongchang has a slogan, ‘Happy700 Pyeongchang’. Pyeongchang county takes its slogan from the city’s average elevation. Pyeongchang’s average elevation is approximately 700m.

Performance Target

The Canadian Paralympic Team hopes to put forth a medal-winning performance, increasing the number of podium finishes from Sochi 2014 where Canada won 16 medals.

Chef de Mission

Five-time Paralympian in para ice hockey (formerly called sledge hockey) Todd Nicholson was announced as Chef de Mission on January 24, 2017.todd chef

Nicholson was a member of Canada’s National Sledge Team from 1989 to 2010, was team captain for 15 years and won three Paralympic medals: gold (2006), silver (1998) and bronze (1994). Todd is a great ambassador for Paralympic sport, since his retirement from competition, Nicholson has remained deeply involved in sport at both the national and international levels as an athlete representative and advocate, on and off the field of play.
